I drive back over the Bay Bridge from Oakland to San Francisco from my first visit to Stagebridge nourished by the alchemy of theatre, full of new stories, song and succulent peach cake. A tiny glimpse of a complex body of practice:
I sit in on the Word for Word class:” Once upon a sunny morning a man who sat in a breakfast nook looked up from his scrambled eggs to see a white unicorn with a golden horn quietly cropping the roses in the garden.” The open line of a short story by James Thurber. The class starts with a reading of the story. This is followed by a ‘Jaming’ of the text -the different characters/ voices are identified and the class take roles and start to lift it off the page. It’s a very effective technique. One minute the story lies flat on the page the next minute the group are dancing around the room with it: narrative transformed into action. The class is led by guest artist instructor Jeri Lynn Cohen. This is part of Stagebridge’s strategy of engaging the very best artists and practitioners to lead classes and workshops.
